Things you should know about Viet Nam

  halong bay

Halong Bay

Hundreds of boats sail each day to take tourists to the small islands of Halong Bay. And at least a one-day journey from Hanoi to get here is compelling. Fishermen’s villages on the water, big caves to explore, a tasty seafood, an amazing view: everything seems perfect for a visit

Ha Noi

The intellectual heart of Viet Nam welcomes tourists with its lakes, vast boulevards, a kind of French taste in shape of colonial architecture. Start a visit from Hoan Kiem Lake, go to Hang Be Market and its surroundings till the wooden Memorial House. In the morning, from 8 to 11, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex is opened to visitors

Hanoi - Viet Nam Military History Museum

In Ha Noi this wonderful museum faces Vietnamese recent past with pictures, paintings, battles reconstructions and authentic war remnants: soldiers boots and helmets, US helicopters and airplanes, a statue made of wreckage “talk” about a great deal of pain

Hué

On the Perfume River, a placid town has a lot to offer: people are kind, life seems slow and easy, food is great… but its history is very fascinating: once this was the capital city of the Vietnamese Kingdom and its prohibited city is really wonderful. Enter it from the Southeast Gate and explore it starting from Ngo Mon Gate, then proceed to its many temples and get lost into a very special place

Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)

This is history: in Quang Tri there is a church destroyed by bullets (a lot of them), some miles north there are the remaining of some US bases, the incredible Vinh Moc tunnels and the Dong Ha war cemetery. Enough to give anybody the creeps

Da Nang

An amazing beach, hills all around, pagodas survived to bullets and bombings, brand new skyscrapers and bizarre two-storey houses. Experience the sunset looking at the Monkey Mountains: you’ll remember it

Hoi An

Very close to Da Nang, the ancient city of Hoi An has many buildings to be visited: among the most famous, Quan Cong and Nguyen Thai Hoc Temples, Cao Dai Pagoda, the Japanese Covered Bridge and a lot of very beautiful houses

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Scooters all around, a vibrant modernization, busy people, a culture influenced by France, traffic jams: this is Saigon! The former Hotel de Ville, the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the War Remnants Museum (with a must-be-seen photographic collection) are to be visited

Saigon - Reunification Palace

A ghost palace, untouched by time: it seems that people working at the teleprinters, in the firing ground and even in the kitchen have left only 5 minutes ago. The Huey on the roof look like it could start its engine, too, in minutes. It’s magic, just like walking down the halls and take a look at empty conference rooms

Travelling

Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City are both intercontinental airports: taxis and buses (give your preference to the first, though not so cheap) link them to downtown. All the other airports in Viet Nam only offer domestic flights.
Renting a car is difficult and documents may not be translated in English; moreover, road regulations are never followed by Vietnamese people. An advice: ask to the personnel in your hotel and rent a car with a driver. Bikes are available almost everywhere in cities and towns but it’s better to bear in mind the previous suggestion.
Trains are slow, airfares are expensive but flying is the only way to get to destination and saving time.
Taxis may sound not so cheap in big cities but they’re anyway affordable
