Things you should know about Venice

Venice

There’s no place like Venice in the world: you’ll fall in love with its canals and bridges and spectacular views. Rich in museums and historical buildings, you’ll soon find that its fame is really deserved

San Marco

This is the quarter where to start a visit from: when water floods San Marco square, tourists go mad with joy. Everything is a masterpiece: the Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the clock tower. Getting lost in the surrounding “calle” (very narrow streets) is very simple but it’s the best way to discover the magnificence of buildings, little churches and crooked bell towers

Castello

East of San Marco, walking on the crowded seafront you will get to the “Biennale”. In the middle of Castello, though, there are its most precious treasures, such as San Zaccaria Church and its paintings

San Polo and Santa Croce

Rialto bridge is probably the most renowned bridge in the world: indeed it is wonderful, especially at night when it appears particularly white. Rialto market is to be visited mainly in early mornings. Placid canals and suggestive small bridges are just everywhere

Cannaregio

Cannaregio Canal is a jewel and some of its bridges could be on a postcard. Then visit Campo del Ghetto Vecchio (the old Jewish Ghetto): you’ll find red brick houses, rounded squares and clothes hanging from one building to the opposite over a canal

Dorsoduro

Santa Maria della Salute Church is wonderful and its dome is huge. In Campo San Trovaso there’s a workshop which makes and repairs gondolas: it’s really bizarre seeing them out of water. Campo San Barnaba is a fascinating little square: there are always some painters nearby sketching its church

Burano, Murano, San Giorgio and Giudecca Islands

Go to San Giorgio at dusk if you want to see an amazing sunset on San Marco; waiting for it, a visit to its church is compelling. Murano is located at 40 minutes north of San Marco: famous for its glass, has some very beautiful sights. The authentic star of the northern outer islands is Burano: colourful and radiant, its narrow canals calmly cross this little island, giving a sense of tranquillity

Canal Grande

Go to Piazzale Roma, the northernmost point of Venice, and take a vaporetto (boat bus) to San Marco: you will see the entire Canal Grande from a privileged point of view (in warm sunny weather, try to take a seat in the external places of the vaporetto, at prow or at poop). Then glide on Canal Grande seeing the most superb buildings of Venice, such as Santa Lucia Church, Vendramin Palace, Ca’ Pesaro, Ca’ d’Oro, Rialto Bridge and Giustinian Palace

Gondolas

Venice symbol indeed: there’s a multitude of gondolas moored at Riva degli Schiavoni, on the seafront of San Marco square, which generates hilarious traffic in nearby Fondamenta Orseolo when rented. Tips to take some photos: go to Via Larga XXII Marzo, Calle del Cristo and Campo Manin in San Marco quarter and to Rio di San Zulian in Castello quarter

Venice special advices

Marco Polo airport is located 10 km north of Venice: buses and taxi cabs to Piazzale Roma, nearby Santa Lucia railway station, are available; then take a vaporetto or taxi boats.
Local boat buses are very useful and efficient, especially for longer distances and to get to the outer islands: different travel cards can be purchased.
Travelling by Gondalas costs approximately 80 euros for 40 minutes
