Things you should know about Hong Kong

First time in Hong Kong

A subtropical climate, skyscrapers everywhere, busy people, mountains of electronic gadgets, wonderful sceneries suspended from hills to the sea: this is Hong Kong!

Skyscrapers

In many movies some of HK skyscrapers have a special appearance as “guest stars” (IFC 1 and 2 in Batman Forever, for example) but Bank of China, Lippo anf HSBC are interesting and incredible as well, alongside the Jardine House which was the first to be built in 1970

Temples

Temples are in between the skyscrapers, sometimes hidden by them (for example, Man Mo, Tam Kung, Hung Shing). Po Lin, instead, is on top of a Lantau Island hill and its giant Buddha really deserves a visit. In the New Territories, near China mainland border, Fung Ying Seen Koon and the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery are undoubtedly the best

Hong Kong Island

Take the subway and get off at Queen’s Road and Peddar Street, the busiest crossroad in the world and then stroll to Soho with its magic escalators before paying the visit to Des Veux Road for its dried fish shops (and their smell). On the opposite side, in Causeway Bay butcher’s shops on the street and electronic gadgets live together while sampan and fish-boats are at bay near the former airport runway

Kowloon

The Jade Market, Tin Hau Temple, the neon signs in Mong Kok, the Bird, Flowers and Ladies’ Markets… to many places claim for a visit. Kowloon Park is a must, as well as a walk on Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, the promenade facing Hong Kong Island

Victoria Peak

Not many metropolis in the world have a overlooking point on a hill, easily accessible at night and with a tramway: well, Hong Kong has it and climbing Victoria Peak is absolutely compelling. A tip: in summer try to be on top by 6 pm to admire the view before and after sunset

Nightlife

Wan Chai: lapdancers, model dancers, bizarre people, soldiers, prostitutes… but first quality bars and good music, too, especially live. An Lan Kwai Fong, of course, where beer is the official drink

Star Ferry

An institution dated 1888 which transports people between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and survived other public transport evolution. Take a Star Ferry in the rush hour to get involved in the real HK life or during the day the get the cheapest view from the sea

Symphony of Lights

Every night, at 20.00, on Kowloon Promenade be ready to see laser lights enlightening the sky and the sea with their reflections. It’s free and always crowded: get there early to grab the best spots

Hong Kong Special Advices

The new hi-tech airport is located in Lantau Island: taxis and buses will get you downtown, even though the quickest and cheapest way is choosing Airport Express train (24 minutes to get to Hong Kong Island).
Hong Kong public transportation network is clean, modern, easy-to-use and cheap; the subway lines are the quickest way to get around. Buy a “Octopus Card” and charge it whenever you want to get where you like: it’s the easiest way to travel by bus, too.
Taxis are incredibly cheap and fast for any western standard
