Things you should know about Florence

  piazza della signoria

Piazza della Signoria

This is the very heart of Florence: start here your visit, in this strangely shaped square whose renowned Palace is one of the symbols of this town; near the front door, there’s a copy of the David by Michelangelo. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most famous museums in the world: art masterpieces from 13th to 18th century reside here

Duomo

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore has a gothic style and its dome (wonderful paintings on its ceiling) was designed by Brunelleschi. On its left side there is Giotto’s Bell Tower, in front of it the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Any street leading to Piazza della Signoria is really fascinating, as well as the huge Piazza della Repubblica

Boboli

This quarter lies on Arno river and its most famous bridge is Ponte Vecchio, full of jewellery shops one after the other. Palazzo Pitti is another famous museum: the Boboli Gardens are located just behind it

Santa Maria Novella

In this Church you will find masterpieces made by Giotto, Masaccio and Brunelleschi. At dusk walk towards the Santa Trinita bridge: houses along the Arno river have pastel colours enlightened by the sun

San Marco

In this quarter there is the Gallery of the Accademia, in which you will find many sculptures by Michelangelo including the original “David”: it’s impressive, enormous, and its face changes expression if you’re looking at it from its left or its right side. Santissima Annunziata Church is another place that must be visited for the richness of its decors. Then just stroll around and discover what this area has to offer (outlooks on the Duomo, workshops, little decorations or friezes on the front of some buildings)

Santa Croce

Old medieval houses in a long square ending with a Church with Giotto’s frescoes, little street markets, rich palaces among modest houses: this is Santa Croce, and at every turn you can look at other famous buildings in distance (Palazzo della Signoria or the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, for example) to regain orientation if you’ve lost it due to all these impressive artworks

San Lorenzo

The covered Central Market is full of colours and smells and you can find anything you want to cook a perfect Italian dish. Some artworks? San Lorenzo Basilica and its cloister, De Medici’s Chapels and Sant’Apollonia Last Supper

San Miniato al Monte

Getting here takes almost one hour on public transportation from Santa Maria Novella station but it’s undoubtedly worthwhile: the Church has many beautiful frescoes and there’s a very good view on Florence. At 5 minute walking distance, another excellent outlook opens up in Piazzale Michelangelo: it’s always very crowded in late evenings by people waiting for the sunset

Oltrarno

Santo Spirito Basilica has many amazing frescoes which deserve a visit. In the surrounding streets workshops windows offer a glimpse on everyday life in Florence. End your journey at dusk on Arno river

Florence special advices

Florence's airport is located 5 km from city center and buses and taxis are always available. If you’re getting to Florence by train, choose Santa Maria Novella station, which is situated in downtown (be aware of the people dwelling there).
Florence is very small (in Whygo Italy site there are a lot of information about where to find an accommodation, what to eat and many other tips), at least for touristic places, so you won’t have to spend too much time in deciding what bus to take: almost each museum or interesting spot is at walking distance. Only getting to San Miniato al Monte or Piazzale Michelangelo needs a bus: you can buy a single ticket valid for 70 minutes or a daily card
