Things you should know about Barcelona

  casa batlo

Barcelona

A city surrounded by mountains and beaches: almost incredible but this is Barcelona! A sunny climate comes with architectural wonders, a very good cuisine and its renowned Movida

The modernism in the Eixample

Casa Batllo is one of the symbols of Barcelona: created by Gaudi, it shows everybody his geniality, from its front to its interiors. Casa Mila, known as “Pedrera”, is on the other side of the crossroad and designed by the same architect. Other modernist buildings are Casa Amantler, Casa Asia, Casa Lleo Morera and Parc Guell

  la sagrada familia

La Sagrada Familia

Gaudi masterpiece: still uncompleted (and maybe never will), La Sagrada Familia shows statues and evangelical scenes in different styles, some sharp-cornered and others very realistic. The interior is completely different and tall and with very big flowers in the ceiling

Eixample

The heart of Barcelona: a splendid square, Plaça de Catalunya, opens on a main busy crossroad, which leads to one of the best avenue of this city, Passeig de Gracia. Bizarre statues unveil themselves on Rambla de Catalunya till Avinguda Diagonal

Montjuic, Sants and Poble Sec

Take the “Teleferic de Montjuic” to see a superb view of Barcelona; then visit the castle and go to Palau Nacional

Barri Gotic and Rambla

The Barri Gotic is the oldest quarter of Barcelona: narrow “calles” guide to authentic pearls of this city, such as the Cathedral and some marvellous squares (Placa de San Felip Neri and Placa del Pi)

El Raval

El Raval, west of the Ramblas, is famous for El Teatre del Liceu and La Boqueria, a colourful covered market whose surrounding restaurants offer any kind of succulent dishes. Palau Guell, El Museu Maritim and the Museum of Contemporary Art are to be visited

La Ribera, Port Vell and Barceloneta

The Palau de la Musica Catalana is an incredible building: its glass front could suggest a different kind of edifice but, once inside, you’ll discover another modernist masterpiece, especially the ceiling. In the Parc de la Ciutadella there are some museums and an impressive fountain

  rambla de santa monica

Ramblas

A visit should start from the seashore, at the monument dedicated to Columbus (a lift will take you the top for a magnificent view of the port). Then walk the Ramblas in a sequence of ancient shops, statues, bizarre palaces and strange people in guise of statues themselves

Barcelona special advices

Barcelona’s airport is located 15 km west of city center: buses and taxis can easily take you downtown.
Public transportation, TMB, is efficient but at night just it’d be better to take a taxi.
Barcelona Card may be valid for 2 to 5 days, offering free public transportation and discount at some museums.
Be always aware of your belongings and never walk out of the hotel with more money than strictly necessary: bag-snatchings happen too often
